| Walnut Grove is a city located in Redwood County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 599. Walnut Grove is the home of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum, dedicated to the author of the Little House on the Prairie books. GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.DemographicsAs of the census2 of 2000, there were 599 people, 291 households, and 178 families residing in the city. The population density was 222.4/km² (577.7/mi²). There were 341 housing units at an average density of 126.6/km² (328.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.66% White, 0.67% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 1.17% Pacific Islander, and 0.17% from two or more races. 0.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 291 households out of which 21.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 36.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.06 and the average family size was 2.67. In the city the population was spread out with 19.4% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 28.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. The median income for a household in the city was $24,013, and the median income for a family was $34,167. Males had a median income of $24,750 versus $20,192 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,637. 9.6% of the population and 5.0% of families were below the poverty line. 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
