Where the Heart Is is a 1990 film directed by John Boorman, starring Dabney Coleman and Uma Thurman.

Plot summary

Stewart McBain (Coleman) is a successful self-made man who determines that his three college-aged children are spoiled and soft so he throws them all out of the family home and gives them the keys to one of his abandoned properties in the city, telling them to gets jobs and learn to support themselves.

They struggle, but end up learning about developing their strengths as well as dealing with other (sometimes highly eccentric) people. Meanwhile Stewart's company is the target of a hostile takeover leading to financial ruin because of his highly mortgaged lifestyle and a personal crisis eventually causing his suddenly destitute scions to agree to take him in.
