| Wings is a 1927 silent movie about fighter pilots during World War I (Charles 'Buddy' Rogers and Richard Arlen), who vie for the same girl (Jobyna Ralston). The film was the first film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture (then called "Best Picture, Production"), in 1929. It was also the only film to ever win the Academy Award for Engineering Effects. The film was written by John Monk Saunders (story) and Louis D. Lighton and Hope Loring, and directed by William A. Wellman, with an original orchestral score by John Stephan Zamecnik (J S Zamecnik), which was uncredited. The film has been deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
