Winter Light (originally titled Nattvardsgästerna) was both written and directed by world-renowned Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman in 1963, and stars Bergman regulars Gunnar Bjornstrand and Max von Sydow.

Plot

The film follows the pastor of a small rural Swedish church as he questions the existence of God and his faith is replaced with apathy. His decline in faith is illustrated through his interactions with his paritioners. In one scene, he attempts to council a man who is considering suicide because he is terrified of nuclear war, and instead reveals his idea of a 'spider God' and his doubts about religion. The man drives away and kills himself. The climax of the movie is reached as the pastor stands on the pulpit and delivers an impassioned sermon to an empty church. Winter Light is considered the second in the Trilogy of Faith, the first movie being Bergman's Through a Glass Darkly and the third movie being The Silence. Bergman, however, has denied that the movies were ever meant to be a trilogy and says they have very little in common.
