| Wolf Creek is an Australian horror film. It was released in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland on 16 September 2005, on 3 November 2005 in Australia (apart from the Northern Territory), and on 25 December 2005 in the United States. Wolf Creek was marketed as being "based on true events". Although the producers have not disclosed which incidents inspired the film, some media sources have speculated that it may have been based on the backpacker murders of 1989-92, the Peter Falconio disappearance of 2001, and/or the 1992-99 Snowtown murders. The similarities of the film with the Falconio case led the defense team of the man charged (later convicted) with his murder, Bradley John Murdoch, to obtain a court order preventing Wolf Creek's release in the Northern Territory during the trial (the film was released instead in January 2006). The film's director and writer has stated that Wolf Creek is not based on any single event. The film, by first-time director Greg McLean (who also wrote the script and produced it), stars Cassandra Magrath as Liz Hunter, Kestie Morassi as Kristy Earl, John Jarratt as Mick Taylor, and Nathan Phillips as Ben Mitchell. It was nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in the category "World Cinema, Dramatic". Wolf Creek opened on 151 screens around Australia and took AU$1.225 million in its first weekend, making it the number one film for the weekend. The film grossed over £1,500,000 in the UK, an impressive return for a low-budget horror film. It has taken an equally impressive $13,000,000 in the US so far. Despite the film's commercial success, it has received a mixed reception from critics. Some critics were deeply offended by the film's brutality, while others praised it for its unorthodoxy and daringness. Critic Roger Ebert gave it a rare zero stars rating, saying, "There is a line and this movie crosses it. I wanted to walk out of the theatre and keep on walking" . Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald said that Wolf Creek was the first movie she ever walked out on. She called watching the movie "punishment" and wondered how someone's real death inspired this "entertainment". However it received some fantastic reviews in the British press with The Independent praising its departure from the generic rules of the horror film . Notoriously hard to impress Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw awarded it 4/5 stars and Time Out said "by making us feel the pain, Greg McLean’s ferocious, taboo-breaking film tells us so much more about how and why we watch horror movies" . They admitted however that the movie was not for everyone. The "Wolf Creek" of the title is a meteorite crater, in reality spelt "Wolfe Creek", in northern Western Australia.
