Plot

Chris Finn is on his way to a job interview and is driving through the mountains of West Virginia. Due to a chemical spill in the road ahead, he decides to take a different route (an abandonded dirt road in the middle of nowhere). He then by accident, crashes into a car sitting in the middle of the road.

He then meets a group of friends on a hiking trip who include Jessie, whom are stranded on the road. Two people stay in the car, whilst the remainder of the group goes for help, only to find an old cabin isolated in the West Virginia woods, that is home to a group of cannibalistic mountain men, who are horribly disfigured from years of inbreeding.

Confrontations occur with the mountain men, then they make a mad dash through the woods; only hoping to make it out alive.

Trivia

  • In the scene when the four are running from the cabin after awaking the mountain men, Desmond Harrington
broke his right ankle after landing on the opposite side of a log. This made it very difficult to shoot some of the scenes after his left leg is "shot" and he has to limp on his right leg.
  • The promotion for this film was minimal due to the MPAA deeming the majority of TV Spots and Trailers "Too Intense" for the viewers. Even the commercials that were shown, were heavily trimmed.
  • During one of the last scenes in the movie, Eliza Dushku
    accidentally set actor Julian Richings
    (Three Finger) on fire.
  • Kevin Zegers
actually had to be naked in the scene where Francine does something with his "parts".
  • Several of the cast and crew were covered in poison ivy throughout the filming of the movie; this was due to the chairs being placed in what was first thought to be a group of weeds only later to be discovered as a batch of poison oak.
  • Emmanuelle Chriqui
dislocated her shoulder performing her fall through the trees. You can hear her shoulder pop on the production track in the theatrical sound mix.
