Movies - Yellow Hair 2

Yellow Hair 2 is a 2001 South Korean movie. It is rather avant-garde on many fronts.

Plot

There are three main characters: a convenience store clerk, a somewhat racy transsexual (played by real-life transsexual Ha Ri-su
) and a videographer. The characters are not named during the course of the movie, but in the credits they are called J (the transsexual), Y (the clerk) and R (the videographer). For most of the movie, each character's story is told in non-consecutive narrative format (perhaps in a nod to Pulp Fiction
). The story consists of four segments: Pornography in Blue, A Space Man, Documentary and Last Scene.

Pornography in Blue

Y has been getting harassed by her boyfriend, who has secretly videotaped the two of them having sex and is threatening to sell the video on the open market. She goes to her boss at the store for help, but he agrees to help her only if she will have sex with him. She makes up with her boyfriend, but then discovers that her boss, too, has secretly been videotaping her while she changes in the back room.

With this as background, she takes a check from J to pay for some beer.

A Space Man

J meets a man while singing in a club in Thailand. He asks her for help, because he doesn't really speak English. He asks her for a ride back to his hotel on her motorcycle. They fall in love.

Back in South Korea, she works as a singer. They continue seeing each other until he stops returning her calls.

Finally, one night, he shows up at her apartment. She is overjoyed, until she realizes that his parents are with him. The boyfriend's father says "I thought my son had a girlfriend, but instead he has a... thing like you." The father says is a retired police officer and demands to see her ID card (as this would list her legal sex). She refuses to show it to him, saying "You said you already know what's on it." He instead flings food at her while the boyfriend's mother prays.

A short while later, she goes into Y's convenience store and uses a check to buy beer. The boss notices that she is not using ID, and demands to see her ID. She turns in anger and smashes a bottle of beer over his head.

Documentary

R carries his video camera with him wherever he goes, videotaping everyday life.

He goes to tape a Buddhist exorcism, watching the ceremony and then asking the monk if ghosts can really be removed that way. The monk says that they can, but can't really explain how it works. The monk also looks at R's camera case and asks what it is. After R tells him, the monk says, "It's dangerous."

Next, he tapes a woman walking down the street. She turns and approaches, telling him to turn off his camera. "I work around here -- I can call one of the mafia boys to take care of you!" She also slaps him. He pretends not to speak Korean, babbling in pseudo-English. She says "I'm sorry" and walks off, confused. He turns and says "It's hard to be a documentarian," then goes to get something to drink at the convenience store.

As he gets something to drink, the boss walks out of the back room and demands to see J's ID card. R begins taping the incident. J smashes the bottle over the boss's head. R puts down his camera case as the boss gets up. The boss rushes towards J, furious, but slips on the liquid on the floor and falls, banging his head against the camera case. Blood flows out onto the floor.

The three question who did it -- is Y responsible? Did the boss do it to himself? Was it a malicious ghost? And what should they do -- pretend it was a robbery? No, Y says, she isn't good at lying. Say that J did it and let her flee? No, again, Y isn't good at lying, and it isn't really J's fault. They decide to cover up the death scene.

They go together to a bar to plan their next step. Y remembers that there is a camera in the store and that their cover-up may have been recorded.

Two obnoxious men come into the bar and demand to drink with the trio. It eventually results in a fight that only ends when J hits one of the troublemakers over the head with a Coke bottle.

The trio flee to a hotel room, where Y decides to have sex with R. J lies curled up and lonely on the floor as they do this.

After a few days, the trio go to another bar. As they are drinking and trying to decide what to do, several police officers come in to check IDs. Having no other choice, the three leave, forgetting to pay their bill. The officer at the bar offers to pay their tab, then chases after them down the back alleys of Seoul.

Y trips and falls, forcing J to wait and trip the officer. As he lays on the ground, she picks up his gun and points it at him. He gets the better of her, though, and when the other two come back, he begins berating them one by one, calling J a pervert, R a dog and Y a "hole". This only ends when J clubs the officer over the head with the camera case.
