Musicians - Andrea Echeverri

Andrea Echeverri spent 10 years as the lead singer of the popular Colombian rock band Aterciopelados
. During that time, the band recorded six albums and became one of the hottest bands in its genre.

Then Echeverri became pregnant. When the artist found out, she retreated to Bogotá for a year. It was there that she began writing songs about pregnancy, her baby, love and other "feminist issues," she said. Within months, she had enough material to record her own album. And with the help of Aterciopelados member Héctor Buitrago, she headed to the studios to record it.

In her first solo album, Andrea Echeverri delivers a lush, sensual collection inspired by her recent passage into motherhood. The result is a collection of ethereal electronica and softly rocking lullabies that show off the subtly powerful voice of this Colombian vocalist. The album is made up of "songs from the bed" for her longtime romantic partner, and "songs from the cradle" for her baby girl, Milagros. The former include "Amortiguador," or "Shock Absorber," a loving ode that makes clever use of vehicular puns; the latter "Lactochampeta," a fun, rhythmic celebration of lactation. Recorded in Bogotá and mixed by the Grammy-winning Thom Russo, who's worked with Colombian superstar Juanes
, Echeverri's album is a lively, rich and mature mixture of alt-rock, Latin traditions, and playful splashes of American country and African highlife. Even the joyous baby-inspired songs, such as "A-Eme-O" or "Baby Blues" bend with minor harmonies well suited for Echeverri's honey- and smoke-tinged vocals and which, not unlike the tone of a Garcia-Marquez fable, carry a melodic thread of sweet melancholy.

Also, Andrea was chosen by Gustavo Cerati
to sing " En la Ciudad de la Furia" for Soda Stereo
's MTV unplugged album.
