| Astrud Gilberto, born in 1940 is a Brazilian Jazz singer of international fame, often referred to as "The Girl from Ipanema", title of the Grammy award winning bossa nova song that made her famous in the sixties. She was born in Bahia, Brazil, of a German father and a Brazilian mother. With her family, which included two sisters, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, in 1947. In the late fifties, she befriended a group of (then) young aspiring musicians, whose musical "guru" was guitarist/singer João Gilberto, the main creator of bossa-nova, who in Brazil is known as "O Papa da bossa nova” (the Pope of bossa-nova). She was, in fact, introduced to João by a mutual friend who was a member of the group, Nara Leão. She married João Gilberto in 1959, and the couple divorced in 1964. Astrud Gilberto’s recording of "The Girl from Ipanema”, a huge international hit, started a long career in music for the singer, who in the seventies also started to record and perform her own compositions. Astrud has recorded with two of her idols: Gil Evans and Chet Baker, as well as with Quincy Jones, Stanley Turrentine, Walter Wanderley, George Michael, Ettiene Daho and Michael Franks. Her music has had a strong influence on the work of many other individual artists and groups to follow, who have expressed having been inspired by her recordings. In 1992 Astrud Gilberto received the "Latin Jazz USA Award for Lifetime Achievement" , and In 2002 she was inducted to the "International Latin Music Hall of Fame". Anyone visiting her website these days will find out a couple more things about Astrud Gilberto: that she is also a fine arts artist, and that she is an ardent advocate of animal rights and has written a compelling essay on helping animals.
