Musicians - Athena Asamiya

Athena Asamiya is a character from SNK Playmore's King of Fighters series of fighting games.

History

Athena is said to be the present incarnation of the Greek goddess Athena (à la Saint Seiya), the goddess of wisdom and war. However, even if she did hold her divine reputation, Athena always tries to act like a normal girl and do what typical girls do, and can also sing.

Having been born an esper with psychic powers, based on that of the resurrection bird, the Phoenix, Athena vows to use her powers in order to protect justice, and make evil recoil. While she was travelling back home from school, Athena met a couple of Chinese fellows fighting against a local tough guy, and recognized them as Sie Kensou and Chin Gentsai.

After defending justice for so many years, Athena and her Psycho Soldiers got a well-deserved rest for two years. During this time, she met Bao, an adopted student of Chin. Athena liked the boy very much, since he was so cute and friendly. Before 1999, Kensou lost his psychic powers for some unknown reason.

Original Athena

Athena Asamiya is the present incarnation of the goddess Athena, who appeared in her own game for the NES, titled simply Athena, and most recently made an appearance in the non-canon vs game, SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom, in her previous form. In her role in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom, she is labeled as an angelic being who guards the entrance to heaven. Along with Red Arremer, who guards the entrance to hell, she is a powerful character who must be unlocked.

Trivia

  • Original Athena appears as Athena's Another Striker in KOF 2000.
  • Kensou never seems to give up in trying to make Athena his girlfriend, though she rejects him time after time.
  • Athena has a crush on Kyo Kusanagi, although she respects that he already has a girlfriend, Yuki. She has recently given up, for the sake of her friend Yuki.
  • Athena has appeared in all of the King of Fighters games from KOF 94 to KOF XI. Unlike most of the characters, Athena's outfit and hair style are different in just about every King of Fighters game.
  • Athena is currently voiced by Haruna Ikezawa, and also appears as a playable character in Capcom vs. SNK 2 and The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact. She also appears in her original form in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom as an unplayable boss character (unlockable in the home version), and also returns in this form in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
  • Athena was the mascot of SNK in the late 1980s, with platformers like Athena and Psycho Soldier, which was also the debut of Sie Kensou. If you play KOF 96-98, and KOF 2002, you'll notice her theme song is a remixed version of the theme from Psycho Soldier 1987. When SNK switched home publication from the NES to their own Neo-Geo, Athena made an appearance in Baseball Stars Professional, but then she was eventually replaced as the main SNK character by Terry Bogard.
  • One of few Fan guides states that Athena and Kyo Kusanagi attend the same school.
  • Athena is credited with being SNK's favorite character.
  • While lately there have been games where Athena's voice actress does a repeat, it's been a sort of running joke that Athena must have a different voice actress in each game(just like she always needs to change outfits and hairdo). Haruna Ikezawa's been the voice actress to voice Athena the longest (from '98 onwards), but probably the most memorable has been Yukina Kurisu, who sang a vocal version of Athena's Psycho Soldier theme song in the non-Neo Geo versions of King Of Fighters '97.
