| Bob Rock is a Canadian musician, sound engineer, and record producer. Rock began as a guitarist and co-founder of the Payola$. He wanted to be a rock star, but that dream took him into a new realm of possibility: beginning as an assistant at Little Mountain studios in Vancouver, he eventually became Canada's most sought after engineer and producer. Bob Rock redefined the sounds for many bands, making many outrageous fringe bands become more "mainstream"; this included bands like Metallica and Mötley Crüe. For this reason he is occasionally criticised. He has also worked with Bon Jovi, Cher, The Cult, David Lee Roth, Skid Row, Veruca Salt, Nina Gordon, Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, and Simple Plan. His trademark is a big, forceful sound that still retains commercial appeal. Rock briefly returned to performing music in 1993, forming the band Rockhead with ex-Payola$ drummer Chris Taylor. The band recorded and released one self-titled album and two singles, but split up shortly afterwards, and Rock went back to producing other bands. For Metallica's 2003 album St. Anger, which he produced, Rock played bass guitar, as Metallica was between bassists at the time. In 2005, after several albums with Rock establishing himself as Metallica's main producer many Metallica fans had become weary of it. After the release of St. Anger many fans turned against Bob Rock citing him as the cause or root of the problem - the problem being in many fans eyes that the album lacked good production or consistency in the music. A petition created by a fan, Michael Vasiliou, asked for Bob Rock and Metallica to go their separate ways. Several thousand people signed it with new signatures added each day. The petition can still be found online. Some fans cite the petition as successful and that Metallica or Bob Rock heeded their words and discontinued their partnership, some believe it is because Bob Rock was too busy working with other bands to produce them at that time. It should be noted that whilst Metallica's 2003 effort St. Anger featured Rock on electric bass and as a co-writer, the majority of albums produced by Bob Rock for Metallica were written by the Hefield/Ulrich part of the band (as are most of their songs in total) and that Metallica's output may not change just because the producer has. On February 16, 2006, Metallica made the announcement that Bob Rock would not be producing their next album. The band announced on their official web site that their next album is going to be produced by the legendary producer Rick Rubin. Bob Rock announced that he will spend the majority of 2006 producing the upcoming Mötley Crüe album.
