Carson P. Cooman, American Composer and Organist

Life and Work

Carson Cooman has composed over six hundred different works for all ensembles including orchestra, band, chorus, chamber music, works for solo instrument, works for piano and organ, operas and musicals, as well as liturgical works and hymns. His music is published primarily by MMB Music, Inc., Musik Fabrik, and Wayne Leupold Editions, Inc.

As a concert organist, he has premièred hundreds of works by living composers written specifically for him.

Cooman has also been active as a writer, serving as editor for Living Music Journal, contemporary music reviewer for American Recorder (journal of the American Recorder Society, and publishing numerous articles on subjects related to contemporary music in other publications. His principal research interests have been related to contemporary American and Australian composers.

He has collaborated with many living authors including Mary Louise Bringle, John Core, Richard Leach, Elizabeth Kirschner, Randy Northrup, Joyce Carol Oates, Andrew Pratt, Mark Schweizer, Calvin Seerveld, Derek Strahan, John Thornburg, Kathleen Wakefield, Rae E. Whitney, Anna Winslow, and Brian Wren.

Cooman holds degrees from Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University and his principal teachers have been Bernard Rands
, Judith Weir
, Alan Fletcher, and James Willey.
