Christoph Graupner (January 13, 1683 - March 10,1760) was a baroque composer, born in Hartmanndorf near Kirchberg in Saxony. He was active for almost all of his career at the court in Darmstadt, where his primary responsibility was to provide music for the court chapel. Graupner composed over 1400 cantatas, 113 Sinfonias, 85 Ouvertures, 49 concertos, operas, many chamber works and harpischord pieces. Over the course of his career, he had contacts with several other baroque composers, most notably Georg Philipp Telemann . Graupner was the second candidate for the position of Cantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, after Telemann declined the post. Graupner's patron (Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt) did not release Graupner from service, clearing the way for J. S. Bach.

Graupner is an obscure composer for several factors: his manuscripts were the source of a legal battle between his heirs and his patron, the Landgrave of Hesse Darmstadt. Despite Graupner's wishes his manuscripts be burnt after his death, his heirs were unable to obtain permission to sell or publish. Other than Johann Friedrich Fasch, Graupner had very few pupils to spread his musical legacy, unlike J. S. Bach.
