| Elena Bashkirova is a pianist and the wife of the Argentine-Israeli pianist Daniel Barenboim. They were married in 1988 following the death of his first wife, the late British cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Born in Moscow, Russia, Elena is the daughter of Russian pianist and teacher Dimitri Bashkirov and studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. She is the founder of the Metropolis Ensemble in Berlin, Germany and Jerusalem International Festival of Chamber Music (also JIFCM's artistic director) in 1998. Elena and Daniel have two sons - a classical musician and a manager-writer for a German hip-hop band called Level 8.
