Alissar Khoury, known as Elissa (Arabic: إليسا) is an Arabic Music star from Lebanon. Born on the 27th of October, 1972. Launched off her career in 1998 with a breakthrough hit "Baddi Doub".

Biography

Elissa started off her singing career back in the early 90's in Studio Fann over LBCI channel. After a long absence, she came back with a Spanish-Arabic mash up titled “Badi Doub” in 1998. Her first album Baddi Doub was one of the largest selling Album in Lebanon and the Middle East. She sold over 150.000 copies. She features a flamenco artist named Gerard Ferrer in the song, Baddi Doub.

Her second project in 2000 was a duet with Ragheb Alameh Betghib Betrouh, a catchy song which leaded her through and made her far more popular than before. The song was included in Elissa's second album W'akherta Ma'ak. The album titled song W'akherta Ma'ak video was released. The album "W'akherta Ma'ak" went on to sell more than 200,000 copies. Elissa has back then appeared in most of her videos using White Bedsheets wrapped around her. Which created a form or image for parodies to mock about.

Later on, Elissa was featured with the international artist Chris DeBurgh in an Arabic-English song titted “Lebanese Nights”, which was written, composed and distributed by Chris DeBurgh. He envisioned writing this song while being in Lebanon on his last visit in a Lebanese restaurant. He decided to sing it with a Lebanese singer, and that was Elissa. Recorded in London and released in Chris DeBurgh's 2002 Album, Timing Is Everything.

Her third album Ayshalak was released in June 2002 supported by a video clip by the title of the album, filmed in Paris by the famous French director Fabrice Begotti and her wardrobe was officially by Christian Dior,Paris as well as for the Make up. The video/song made a huge success, and with the aid of the composer/arranger Jean-Marie Riachi, Elissa was able to hit it off with a good trancy yet calm and romantic song. Ajmal Ehsaas was Elissa's second single from her album, Ayshalak. It's video clip was directed by the Lebanese director, Selim El Turk.

Elissa’s Fourth album, Ahla Donya was released in 2004. This album was the first production after the contract Elissa had with Rotana, the music production company. The album included a variety of songs. Such as Koll Youm Fi Omry, Erga' Lel Shoa', Hobbak Waja' (Inta Lameen) and Ahla Donya. The song was a true success for Elissa, which marked her on the road of Stardom along with 3 video clips. The album has lead to a World Music Award which she nabbed on August 2005 as as best-selling Artist in Lebanon. In 2005, a Special Collector's Edition of the record was made available with state-of-the-art packaging including a mini-biography about the singer. The Edition was made available in only 1000 copies, making it a must-have for fans and collectors everywhere.

Elissa is an official spokesperson of Pepsi, she has a total of 2-3 Commercials. One which was done for the energy drink of Pepsi, Pepsi X, included a sample of the song Arrably from the album Ahla Donya before its release date. Another was a collaboration with the 8 finalists of the first season of Star Academy.

In early 2006, Elissa released her 5th studio effort, the album Bastanak. The album carried the silver Rotana logo, which conveys a promotion to a higher level of Stardom in the production company. Elissa was the first female artist and second artist (after Amr Diab) to gain this privilege.

Bastanak was produced by a number of producers, but Jean Mari-Riachi was absent from the Bastanak sessions. A song called “Law Tarafou” was broadcasted over the radio stations to promote the new album, it's considered as the first single of the album Bastanak. So far, the album has shipped nearly 1.6M copies, according to Rotana. The album's release was on the 22nd of February, this year. The promotional photosessions of Elissa's new album were used as part of the Pepsi-endorsment deal.

Elissa rivals certain female Lebanese artists in the Music scene, like Nancy Ajram, Nawal Al Zoghbi and Haifa Wehbe.
