| Felipe Perez Santiago (Mexico City, November 12 1973) is a Mexican composer. In 1996 he obtained the Composition Diploma of the “Centro de Investigacion y Estudios Musicales”, Mexico as well as the Theory of Music Diploma of the “Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music” of London. In that same year that he moved to the Netherlands, supported by the National Fund for the Culture and Arts (FONCA), Mexico, to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory having as teachers Peter-Jan Wagemans and Klaas de Vries, obtaining his Composition Diploma in 2001 with the highest degree and honorific mention. Parallel he studied Electronic Music at the same Institution with teacher Rene Uijlenhoet finishing his Master Degree in 2003. In 2000 he was invited as Guest Composer/Lecturer to the “Drzwi Otwarte Festival (The Doors Opened Festival)" in Krakow, Poland where the piece “El Ansia” for string quartet was performed and recorded. In 2001 he was awarded with the Residence Prize of the “Institute de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges” (IMEB), France, for his piece “Ofaniel (Angel de la Luna)”, and as a consequence of this he was invited as Resident Composer at the “Centre de Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis” (CCMIX), in Paris, France. In November 2002 he also worked invited as Resident Composer at the “Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music” (STEIM), in Amsterdam, Holland , where the piece, “Cempoal”, for string quartet and electronics, which was commissioned by the Doelen Quartet (the string quartet of the Rotterdam Philarmonic), was composed. In 2003 he was invited as Resident Composer at the “Center for Electronic Music” (CEM) in Amsterdam, Holland, where the music for the multimedia production, “Eppur Si Scende”, which was commissioned by Theater Lantaren/Venster in Rotterdam, Netherlands, was composed. Later on that year he received the "Kronos Under 30 Project" Composition Prize given by the Kronos Quartet to write a piece for them, "Camposanto", which premiered in April, 2004, in San Francisco, California. He also received a residence at Stanford University. This piece was written during a residence at the "Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music" (STEIM) in Amsterdam and it has been included in their world tour in more than thirty concerts in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and USA, including concert halls like the "Sydney Opera House" in Australia, the “Theatre de la Ville” in Paris and the "Carnegie Hall" in New York,. In 2005 he was invited by the Staatstheater am Gaertnerplatz in Munich, Germany, together with the choreographer, Dylan Newcomb, to write a piece for the Ballettheater Munchen, “Straight Around” which was premiered in April, 2005. He also has been awarded with grants by the “Rotterdam Fund for the Arts” (RKS), and the “Fund for the Creative Tone Arts” (FST) in Amsterdam. As a teacher and lecturer he has been invited in several artistic institutions in Europe, USA and Latin America. The Music of Felipe Perez-Santiago includes, besides concert music, pieces for dance, opera, video, film and multimedia productions and has been commissioned and played in several countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Latin America, including international festivals like the “Synthese” festival in France, the “CaDance” festival in Holland and the “London Jazz Fringe Festival” in England. He has been recently invited by the cello octet, Conjunto Iberico, to write a piece for them and chamber choir to be premiered in 2006 and by the "Modern Art Museum of Budapest" in Hungary to make a sound installation for the celebration of their 100th Anniversary.
