| Fred Sonic Smith (13 September, 1949 - 4 November, 1994) was the rhythm guitar player in proto-punk band the MC5. He later went on to form the sadly underrated Sonic's Rendezvous Band, variously called "the best band you've never heard of" or "the one that got away". With Sonic's Rendezvous Band, Fred released only one single, the classic Detroit rock song "City Slang". Smith was married to punk pioneer and poetess Patti Smith, and died on 4 November, 1994 of a sudden heart attack, at the age of 45. Patti Smith's 1996 album "Gone Again" features a tribute to her late husband. The Smiths had two children, Jesse Smith and Jackson Smith, the latter of whom presently plays guitar in the Michigan band Back In Spades. The band Sonic Youth took its name from Smith's nickname.
