| Friedrich Kiel (Bad Laasphe-Puderbach, October 8 1821 - Berlin, September 13 1885) was a German composer and music teacher. His compositions include a piano concerto, two piano quintets, three piano quartets (in A minor, E major and G major), at least two string quartets, several piano trios, sonatas for violin (at least four), viola and for cello, motets, oratorios (including the Star of Bethlehem) as well as a Missa Solemnis and a Requiem, among more than seventy works in all with opus number. The opening of one of the violin sonatas, in E minor, is given in William Newman's The Sonata Since Beethoven. Several of the chamber works (recently including one of the string quartets), along with the piano concerto and some choral works, have been recorded. His students included Arthur Somervell, Charles Villiers Stanford, Frederic Hymen Cowen, and Emil Sjögren.
