The song is based on a French song, "Hymne à l'amour" which had been popularized by Edith Piaf. In 1952 the song was recorded by Vera Lynn. The best-known version was recorded by Kay Starr in 1954 and charted that year. In 1959 it returned to the British sheet music charts due to a new recording by Shirley Bassey. It was also subsequently recorded by Olivia Newton-John.
