Musicians - Jaya

Jaya (born Maria Louise Ramsey on March 21, 1970, in Manila, Philippines) is a Filipino pop singer. She is of Afro-Filipino descent.

Biography

Sometimes called the "Queen of Soul" in her own country, the former freestyle artist's 1989 single "If You Leave Me Now" remained at Top 40 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart for 26 weeks, despite lacking a video. "If You Leave Me Now" also gave Jaya the opportunity to work across the US with top artists like MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli, James Ingram, The Jets and Stevie B. In 1995, Jaya met Asia's Queen of Song Miss Pilita Corrales
who offered her a record deal in Manila and signed a contract under Viva Records.

Her 1996 album Jaya spawned several hits, including "Sometimes You Just Know" which is her winning piece in the 1996 Metro Pop Song Festival Competition, the power ballad "Dahil Tanging Ikaw", "Laging Naron Ka", and "Hanggang Ngayo'y Mahal"

She is a mainstay of the Sunday noontime variety show SOP, weekly judge in the popular star search program Pinoy Pop Superstar, and one of the main host of All Star K! The One Million Videoke Challenge.

Jaya is a daughter of the famous comedienne Elizabeth Ramsey.
