| The French Composer and Conductor Jean-Yves Malmasson was born in Saint-Cloud (92) in the Paris Suburbs, in 1963. After studies in Piano, Ondes Martenot, and composition at the Conservatoire National de Région, Boulogne-Billancourt, he went on to study composition and conducting at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won a first prize in composition. His orchestral tone poem "le Chant de Dahut" for Ondes Martenot and Orchestra won the SACEM prize at the 1988 Festival des Tombées de la Nuit, in Rennes (France). His prinicipal teachers include Alain LOUVIER, Pierre GROUVEL, Serge NIGG, Jacques CHARPENTIER (musical writing technique and composition), and Jean-Claude HARTEMANN and Jean-Sébastien BEREAU (conducting). Malmasson's compositions are written in an expressive, extended-tonal style which uses a great deal of harmonic vocabulary borrowed from the style of Olivier Messiaen (notably in the early work "Un Feu Ardent Dans un silence Noir et Froid" for Pianoforte). Malmasson is often inspired by space and astronomy ("Mare Nostrum" for Orchestra, "Corona Borealis" for Large Orchestra and "Aux Bien Brulants Astres d'Or", Symphony no. III for Orchestra). His compositions may also be humourous, as in the "Lettre à Eloïse" and "Estabana" for Violin, Piano and percussion. He pays frequent tribute to his favorite composers of the past, particularly Dmitri Shostakovich, for whom Malmasson has a special affinity (the Symphony no. 1 for Orchestra and "Five Aphorismes" for Piano Trio, both of which use the DSCH theme). In addition to being the Musical director of the City of Puteaux wind orchestra, a post he has held since 1988, Jean-Yves Malmasson is also director of Orchestre Symphonique des Yvelines (Versailles).
