Jon Appleton (born Jon Howard Appleton in Hollywood, California, 1939) is a composer of electronic, electro-acoustic, and acoustic music. He currently teaches at the Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire. Appleton is one of the creators and an early virtuoso of the Synclavier. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities and American-Scandinavian Foundation fellowships. In the spring term of 2004, Dr. Appleton quarreled with the college administration over grade inflation. Dartmouth's Dean of the College alerted him to student complaints asserting that the marks they had received in his music class were bringing down their grade-point averages. Appleton defended his grading system, backing it up by alluding to the need for high standards and expectations within colleges and universities.
