| Joseph Weigl was the name of a father-and-son pair of musicians. Joseph Franz Weigl (1740 - 1820) was the principal cellist in the orchestra of the Esterházy family. He played under the directorship of Joseph Haydn, and it is thought that Haydn wrote his cello concerto in C major (Hob. VIIb/1) for him. He was the father of: Joseph Weigl (March 28, 1766 - February 3, 1846), a composer and conductor. He was born in Eisenstadt and studied music under Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Antonio Salieri. He became Kapellmeister at the court theatre in Vienna in 1792, and from 1827 to 1838 was vice-Kapellmeister of the court. He composed a number of operas, both Italian and German, most of them comic, although most of his late works are pieces of sacred music. He died in Vienna.
