Musicians - Ken Vandermark


Ken Vandermark (born September 22, 1964 in Warwick, Rhode Island) is an American jazz saxophone and clarinet player. He grew up in Massachusetts, graduating from Natick High School. He performed and led groups while in high school and in college (McGill University in Montreal), studying intermittently with George Garzone during the early 1980s. Returning to the Boston area after graduation, he led or co-led groups (including Lombard Street and Mr. Furious) in Boston. He has lived in Chicago since 1989.

Vandermark has performed or recorded with many musicians (including Hal Russell
, Hamid Drake
, Paul Lytton, Joe Morris, Peter Brötzmann
, Paul Lovens, and members of Superchunk), was once a member of the Flying Luttenbachers, and has led several groups, including Free Fall, Territory Band, and the Vandermark 5.

In 1999, Vandermark was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship.
