Musicians - Maarja Kivi

Maarja Kivi (born January 18, 1986 in Tallinn, Estonia) is an Estonian musician, and former member of the girl group Vanilla Ninja
. Kivi started her career in the spotlight by competing in the 2002 Eurolaul, the Estonian competition to find an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Later that year she became one of the original four members of Vanilla Ninja, taking on the lead vocals and role of bassist in most tracks on their first two albums, Vanilla Ninja and Traces Of Sadness. Kivi left the group in mid-2004 due to a pregnancy with her first child, and was replaced by Triinu Kivilaan
.

In December 2005 Kivilaan left Vanilla Ninja, and Kivi's appearance on the cover of their fourth album Best Of (also released in December) suggested that she may be rejoining the group. As of January 2006, however, Vanilla Ninja seem to be continuing as a trio.

Maarja has, since late 2005, been attempting a solo comeback under the name Maarja. Although her solo comeback would at first prove unsuccessful, her single "Could You" would peak at #35 in the Swiss chart, launching Kivi back into the public spotlight.

In taking her first name Maarja for her solo career, Kivi caused some aggreviation within the Estonian music community. This is because Maarja-Liis Ilus, another solo artist in the country who used to work for the same Universal record label that Kivi is signed to, had already been using the name for several years. Ilus is said to see the identical naming as a "bad move" on the part of Kivi and her label.

Kivi is currently signed to Bros Music, who parted company with her former group in late 2005. Despite the rift between Bros and the now three-piece Vanilla Ninja, it seems that Kivi is remaining part of the label, and has continued her affliation with the group's former manager David Brandes
.
