Musicians - Marcello Viotti

Marcello Viotti (June 29, 1954 - February 16, 2005) was a Swiss classical music conductor, best known for opera.

Viotti was born in the French-speaking region of Switzerland to Italian parents. He studied cello, piano and singing at the Conservatory of Lausanne. As a young man, he was mentored by Wolfgang Sawallisch
, who encouraged him to begin his career in the theatre.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Viotti was a director at many opera houses in Europe, including in Lucerne, Vienna, Bremen, and Berlin. He was also a guest conductor at opera houses around the world, recorded albums with singers such as Plácido Domingo
and recorded non-operatic classical music. For the last several years, Viotti had been conductor of the Münchner Rundfunkorchester and the Teatro La Fenice Orchestra in Venice.

Viotti suffered a stroke about a week before his death, and died in a hospital in Munich. He was married and had four children.
