Musicians - Orange and Lemons

:This article is about the Filipino band Orange and Lemons. For other uses, see Oranges and Lemons (disambiguation).

Orange and Lemons is a Filipino rock band formed in 2003, whose name was derived from the nursery rhyme of the same name. Their hit songs include "Hanggang Kailan (Until When)," "Just Like a Splendid Love Song," and most especially "Pinoy Ako ('I'm a Filipino)", which is in the officlal soundtrack of Pinoy Big Brother, Philippines' franchised version of the reality TV show Big Brother.

According to them, their main musical influence is from the famous British band The Beatles. However, they've been accused of plagiarising little-known British bands such as The Care and The Housemartins.

In June 2005, Orange and Lemons was featured on MTV Philippines in its Rising Star segment and in March 2006 they were featured in the Lokal Artist of the Month segment.

Plagiarism accusations

Some critics claim that the melody of the song "Pinoy Ako (I'm a Filipino)" was a direct derivation from the song "Chandeliers" by Care (from the album Diamonds and Emeralds, 1997), an English Alternative Rock band popular in the 1980s.

In an published in the Manila Bulletin, the band claimed that the guitar intro part of "Pinoy Ako" may have been inspired, but the song was definitely not a ripoff and malice was not involved. In an earlier interview aired on GMA-7, they've claimed that they've never heard of Care.

Universal Records, the recording company of Orange and Lemons, and Star Records, who produced "Pinoy Ako", found the band not guilty of plagiarism. In addition, Star Records' parent company, ABS-CBN (which also broadcasts Pinoy Big Brother), featured on its documentary program Kontrobersyal that "Pinoy Ako" and "Chandeliers" are completely different and do not infringe intellectual property rules. Sony BMG, who owns the rights to "Chandeliers", is yet to issue a statement on the matter.

In addition, Orange and Lemons were again charged with plagiarism when their song "A Beginning of Something" sounded a lot like "Happy Hour" of the Housemartins (from the 1986 album London 0 Hull 4).
