| Pietro Cesti (born Arezzo 5 August 1623 – died Florence, 14 October, 1669) was an Italian opera composer. Originally intended to live within the church, he became a friar at the age of 15, but after various indiscretions he left the church and pursued a career as a composer, working in Innsbruck and Vienna as well as Venice and Florence. His most famous and grandest work, Il pomo d'oro, was written to celebrate the wedding of Emperor Leopold I and the Infanta Margherita of Spain. This work was preceded by a sinfonia, one of the earliest examples of an operatic overture.
