Musicians - Talkshow Boy

Talkshow Boy (born January 24, 1985), real name Adrian Bailey Trajstman, is a solo electronic musician and self-made 'hard pop' star from Melbourne, Australia. He has used the pseudonyms Adrian K-Sahara and Tomyum Texmex. Many of his songs are self-referential or postmodern. His music is best described as an amalgamation of breakcore, avant-garde hip hop and lo-fi synthpop characterized by fast tempos, frequently shifting sequences and pastiches of uncleared samples from popular music history. He is passionately independent and has released the majority of his recordings on CD-R. He offers the majority of his back catalogue for free download from his and encourages the redistribution of his music. He is an advocate of filesharing, home recording and DIY. He is a member of the electronic punk trio Service Station Youth and was a member of both 'horror punk/electro-surf' duo The Undead Against You and 'keyboard punk' band Cattle Of The Sun. He is a writer for the Australian music magazine Mess + Noise.

Music

Song Lyrics

Talkshow Boy's lyrics range from awkwardly honest self-assessments to extended stream-of-consciousness rants about the state of popular culture and fandom as well as criticisms of music production and consumption in the 21st century. He has written a number of songs that mention Ukraine. He regularly posts to his Livejournal and has written a song about his love for it entitled "OMG I <3 Livejournal (And My Livejournal <3s Me)". His song "Black Logic (VHS Version)" has lyrics inspired by the cult television series Twin Peaks and Talkshow Boy maintains that the song was written whilst 'stuck' in the fictional Black Lodge. In his song "Beatpop Girl-A-Thon" he claims to be "ostensibly Australia’s best pop genius - nothing but topnotch beatpop quality".

Song Titles

His song titles often parody the titles of existing songs. "LCD Soundsystem Is Locked Under The Stairs And Forcefed Methadone At My House", "Step Into My Orifice, Baby" and "Boy, You'll Be A Monsoon" are satirical references to LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House", Belle And Sebastian's "Step Into My Office, Baby" and Neil Diamond's "Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon" respectively.

Cover Versions

He has recorded and released cover versions of cult indie rock band Pavement's "Spit On A Stranger" and electroclash artist Peaches' "Fuck The Pain Away". In addition, he has been known to perform cover versions of The Specials
' "Ghost Town" and OutKast's crossover hit "Hey Ya!".

Live Performance

Talkshow Boy performs in an energetic fashion and rarely graces the stage during a set, instead opting to sing amongst the audience whilst gesticulating and dancing to pre-programmed instrumentation. He encourages crowd participation during live performances.

Personal Quotes

"THE STORY SO FAR... After the great tech fall-out of 2005, pop had overheated past boiling point. Plundering 'retro' samples was old hat, mashing tracks was deemed wack and electro blo-wave gave way to po-faced neo-no-wave. SFW. Y'all needed a shake-up. Talkshow Boy (AKA Tomyum Texmex) began his own personal shake-up back in 1985 when he popped out of the womb - he'll quit being self-righteous at the gate of his tomb. Testosterone and Estrogen were harnessed within his body as driving forces to realising his vision - 60 years (and counting) of pop reclaimed and redefined to articulate and underscore one life. Tomyum Texmex and his Ringtone Remix proved to be popular with The Youth Sector - these young punks understood more about cultural subversion than your average bunch of deathcult disciples after their next set of dirty teenage kicks. The Youth Sector (shining stars) fully understood that they too could "just do it" and in turn "just did it" - hundreds more Talkshow Boys and Gameshow Girls were thus born. It was nothing new - Tomyum Texmex was just one of thousands of upstarts owning their zone. Even so, there's only one Talkshow Boy - two words, one vision: "keep it real'n'shit". Keep one eye on sharp kin the globe over and the other eye glued to the media - take absolutely every slogan and every pitch they carelessly throw at your demographic and use them, child, use them. Don't eat them."

- Talkshow Boy's liner notes to his 2006 album Testosterone!
