| The Clark Sisters are a group of legendary gospel vocalists based out of Detroit, consisting of Jacky, Denise, Twinkie, Dorinda, and Karen. The Clarks Sisters have been the premier female group in gospel music for almost 30 years. The Clark Sisters are the daughters of the equally legendary Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, one of the first gospel artists to have a gold album, and introduced the three-part (soprano, alto, and tenor) harmony formula to choirs. Led by Twinkie Clark, The Clark Sisters have recorded over 13 albums as a group and are best known for their most popular single, "You Brought The Sunshine," a crossover song that lit up dance floors and gospel concerts in the 1980s. Another very popular song was "Is My Living In Vain," which R&B girl-group Xscape covered in the 1990s. In addition to their own albums and videos, the sisters have, individually or as a group, contributed to countless other projects. Each Clark Sister has a distinct style that contributes to the essence of what is called the "Clark" sound. Twinkie is the creative force and foundation behind the group, who in addition to writing and producing almost all of the Clark Sisters songs and recordings, is an extremely talented vocalist who can sing soprano to bass with relative ease. Dorinda is called the "jazzy" sister; she scats and riffs with an intelligence and fervency that makes her a compelling artist in both gospel and secular venues. Karen, the youngest of the group, is an inimitable vocal acrobat. Jacky brings a balance to the high energy vocals of her younger sisters, by having a sweet, yet versatile delivery. Denise, now a pastor, no longer sings with the group. The Clark Sisters are still the most relevant female gospel group in history and Twinkie is one of the progenitors of contemporary gospel music. All the sisters have released solo projects. Karen's debut "Finally Karen" became one of the best-selling albums of 1997, eventually achieving gold status. She received Grammy and Dove Award nominations, winning the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award and four Stellar Awards. Dorinda's self-titled debut won her many awards, including the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award and two Stellar Awards and critical and commercial acclaim from Gospel and secular arenas alike. Twinkie has recorded 7 solo projects since the late 1970's and her groundbreaking album "Ye Shall Receive Power" is a gospel standard, while a recent offering, "Live in Charlotte", earned her a Grammy nomination. Jacky's solo debut, "Expectancy", has won less critical sympathy, but brings together all four Clark Sisters for more Clark-Clark collaborations than any other album in recent memory.
