The Dawn is a Pinoy rock band who were popular during the late 1980s in the Philippines. They broke up in 1995 and eventually lead vocalist Jett Pangan formed a band bearing his name. But in 2000, they were reunited again.HistoryThe Dawn was originally formed in 1985 by Teddy Diaz (vocals and guitars), Jett Pangan (lead vocals), Clay Luna (bass), and JB Leonor (drums). They derived their name from a portrait of the Holy Spirit that symbolized the dawn of a new day. Diaz, Leonor and Luna initially wanted a female vocalist; but in the course of their search, Jett Pangan auditioned and bagged the trio's unanimous nod. The recharged quartet began performing at clubs and eventually recorded a demo of a song entitled "Enveloped Ideas," a copy of which they submitted to DWXB 102.7, a now-defunct Metro Manila–based FM radio station that heavily played Alternative Rock / New Wave music. It topped the radio station's charts in 1986, helping the group gain a cult following. Heavily influenced by the New Wave style of the '80s, "Enveloped Ideas" is distinct for its introductory operatic vocals a la Klaus Nomi. While The Dawn was in search of a major record label, Luna left the band to immigrate to the US. Carlos "Caloy" Balcells, bass player of another Filipino band, the Cicada Band, soon replaced him. In 1986, The Dawn signed with OctoArts and, in the summer of that year, released their eponymous debut album to commercial success. At the height of their popularity and after the release of their second album I Stand With You on August 21, 1988, Teddy Diaz was senselessly stabbed to death in front of his girlfriend's house. Despite the demise of Diaz, the band persisted with Atsushi Matsuura as the guitarist, but he was later replaced by Francis Reyes. In 1995, they disbanded because the members agreed that it was time to pursue other careers. Pangan eventually formed the Jett Pangan Group and Reyes became a DJ of NU-107, an alternative rock radio station. In 1999, they reunited with both Francis Reyes and Atsushi Matsuura on guitars and performed on GMA Networks' 2000 today Global Millenium Day Broadcast in Ayala Avenue in Makati City, and in that year also recorded Prodigal Sun, an album that, much like the parable of the Prodigal Son, symbolized their return to the music scene. In 2005, a new album, Harapin, was released, featuring singles such as Tulad ng Dati and Laging Narito. The Dawn is currently touring and promoting the album. A 20th anniversary event and other new projects are in the works for 2006. Their immortal hits Enveloped Ideas, Salamat and Iisang Bangka are still requested on the radio airwaves and in their live performances, and fans of all generations are still rocking hard to their music.
