| William Henry Fry (August 10, 1813 - 1864) was an American composer, said to be the first to compose a grand opera that was publicly performed, and was also a critic. Fry was from Philadelphia Pennsylvania, and eventually became secretary of the Philharmonic Society. He was a champion of American classical music. Fry's operatic compositions include Aurelia the Vestal and Leonora. Leonora was a very successful production. Fry later worked for the New York Tribune and the Philadelphia Public Ledger.
