Video games - Demon Attack

Demon Attack is a video game title by Imagic released for the Atari 2600 game console in 1982. The game was extremely successful and is considered to be one of the more popular games released for home videogame consoles of that era. Demon Attack was programmed by Rob Fulop.

The official theme of Demon Attack involves your character having been on the fictional ice planet of Krybor. Legions of demons hover above Krybor and attack you. Demon Attack's gameplay is simple: Use your laser cannon to destroy the various demon hordes in order to survive. In many ways, the game is a typical fixed-shooter of the era, but is somewhat unique in the way it is presented, especially for a graphically-limited console like the Atari 2600. Unlike games such as Galaxian
and Phoenix
, Demon Attack involves the player being on firm land firing at hovering alien beings (more akin to Space Invaders
).

The enemies appear in waves similar to other outer space-themed shooters, but are drawn by bits combining from the sides of the screen to the general sky area above the player's cannon. Early versions of the enemy demons are relatively easy to defeat, but subsequent waves feature new ways to attack the player's cannon, such as long streaming lasers and laser clusters. Later demons also divide into two smaller, bird-like creatures that eventually will try to descend onto the player's cannon.

Demon Attack closely resembles the previously-designed arcade game Phoenix. In fact, Atari, who had purchased the home video game rights to the title, sued Imagic due to the games' similarities. Atari lost the lawsuit and Demon Attack went on to become Imagic's only significant hit title. Besides the Atari 2600 version, other ports were made for the Intellivision and the Odyssey² game consoles.
