Famicom Wars is a turn-based strategy military game. Developed by Intelligent Systems, it was released on August 12, 1988 for the Famicom in Japan. It is the first game in the Nintendo Wars series.

Gameplay

The game takes place over a series of 17 maps: 15 where the player can battle as either Red Star or Blue Moon, then 2 secret maps, each unlocked by beating all 15 maps as either country.

Legacy

This game was not released outside of Japan and is consequently little-known outside Japan. It boasts a large fanbase in Japan. The series would later become popular among English-speaking gamers with the release of Advance Wars
.

This game also inspired the Fire Emblem series.

This game was remade in 1998 for the Super Famicom as Super Famicom Wars
. This remake added more maps, boasted enhanced graphics and music,4-player battles, more COs, and fog of war.

The maps in this game and Super Famicom Wars were later included in Advance Wars
and Advance Wars: Dual Strike
.

Trivia

Samus Aran appears as the Red Star CO of Map #2: Doonatsu-jima (ドーナツジマ) (Donut Island) in this Game.
