Video games - Gloom

Gloom is a team-based multiplayer Quake II
mod created by Team Reaction
. Ever since Gloom's official release on the 30th January, 1999, it has celebrated a long and dynamic life — as far as game modifications are concerned — partly attributed to its atmospheric, addictive and unique gameplay. Even today, there are still a substantial number of Gloom servers, most of which still see a good amount of activity.

Game play

Gameplay consists of a team of aliens and humans fighting for dominance over a wide selection of custom maps. The game is won by eliminating all of the opposing team players and their spawn points. Each team has eight different player classes that may be played, although initially only two are available until the player acquires additional frags by killing enemy players. One of the initial classes is the builder class, responsible for creating spawn points, defenses and other structures. This is the Breeder for the alien team and the Engineer for the humans.

Technology

Gloom is considered to be one of the most advanced Quake II modifications available. Almost all content is custom made, ranging from the player models, sounds and hud icons to over 300 community-created custom maps. The advent of updated Quake II engines such as has allowed Gloom to be continuously improved to take advantage of features such as server-side netcode management, HTTP auto downloading and increased stability.

The future

A sequel to Gloom has long been planned by Team Reaction. Originally, a Gloom sequel was supposed to be made for Quake III Arena
. After Team Reaction initially proposed the idea and subsequently failed to develop it, a community-created version of Gloom for Quake III started development. A member of Team Reaction, R_E_X, decided mid-way through the development process that Team Reaction would develop its own sequel to Gloom, dubbed Gloom II, using the Torque Game Engine. Development on Q3Gloom subsequently slowed down and was stopped altogether after a loss of the central content repository that was hosting all of the development work. Gloom II was never developed beyond concept art.

In late 2002 Team Reaction again became interested in a Gloom sequel using the Quake III Arena engine. The new version was officially announced on February 20, 2003. At present, aside from a and some map screenshots, nothing more is known about Q3Gloom. In early 2004, Team Reaction announced that Q3Gloom was being redeveloped on the Doom III engine. Since then, they have been working with Wirehead Studios on the Doom III version of Gloom of which few details are presently known.
