Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death is the second of two expansion packs for the turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
. It was developed by New World Computing for Microsoft Windows and released by the 3DO Company in 2000. It includes six new playable campaigns, which collectively serve as a prequel to The Restoration of Erathia.

Story

The story of The Shadow of Death unfolds in seven new campaigns which collectively serve as a prequel to both The Restoration of Erathia and Armageddon's Blade, telling the story of four heroes' opposition to Sandro the Necromancer's plans to conquer all of the continent of Antigarich.

New Beginning stars Gem, a druid fleeing from her war-torn homeland of Enroth. She is subsequently manipulated into acquiring special artifacts from a group necromancers that Sandro requires to move his conquest plans forward.
Elixir of Life stars Gelu, a forest ranger and member of the Forest Guard fiven the task of retrieving the ingredients of the Elixir of Life before Sandro's necromancers can acquire them.
Hack and Slash stars Crag Hack, a barbarian chieftain working for Sandro to acquire four artifacts.
Birth of a Barbarian stars Yog, an aspiring barbarian from Bracada seeking to make his name in the barbarian kingdom of Krewlod.
Rise of the Necromancer, which only becomes available after each of the preceding four campaigns have been completed, stars Sandro himself. Using the artifacts collected for him by Gem and Crag Hack, he begins his invasion of the kingdoms of Antigarich.
Unholy Alliance, which only becomees available once Rise of the Necromancer has been completed, features all of the heroes of the previous campaigns, and documents the alliance forged by Gem, Gelu, Crag Hack, and Yog and their victory over Sandro.
Specter of Power is a bonus campaign, again starring Sandro. With his armies repulsed, Sandro seeks an alliance with the rebellious knight Lord Haart and the Kreegans from Eeofol. The conclusion of this campaign leads directly into the story of The Restoration of Erathia.

Gameplay changes

The Shadow of Death introduces adjustable difficulty settings, twelve new artifacts, and eight new terrain types. Additionally, it introduces a fifth artifact equipment slot for all heroes, and ten new types of teleporters.

The Shadow of Death can be installed alongside the first Heroes of Might and Magic III expansion pack, Armageddon's Blade
. New features included in the Armageddon's Blade expansion (such as the Conflux town) are present in The Shadow of Death, but are designed to remain hidden and inaccessible unless certain files installed by Armageddon's Blade are detected in the game's directory. The game, however, checks only for the presence of these files: it does not verify the file contents. Because of this, several gamers discovered that it was possible to create empty files with the correct file names to unlock the Armageddon's Blade enhancements in The Shadow of Death without having to install the earlier expansion pack.
