Video games - Heroes of Might and Magic IV: Winds of War

Heroes of Might and Magic IV: Winds of War is the second of two expansion packs for the turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might and Magic IV
. It was developed by New World Computing for Microsoft Windows and released by the 3DO Company in 2003
, and was the last installment of the Heroes of Might and Magic series to be developed by New World Computing before the bankruptcy of the 3DO Company and the sale of the Might and Magic franchise to Ubisoft.

Winds of War introduces three new creatures to the original Heroes of Might and Magic IV: the Catapult (life-aligned), the Frenzied Gnasher (might-aligned), and the MegaDragon (chaos-aligned). It also includes six new campaigns, which collectively tell the story of the invasion of the kingdom of Channon by the leaders of its five neighboring kingdoms:
  • To Rule the World features Spazz Maticus the Witch-King, ruler of the island nation of Orillos.
  • Barbarian Hordes features Mongo the Barbarian, ruler of an expansionist horde of barbarian warriors.
  • The Magnificent One features Mysterio the Magnificent, a battle mage who seeks to conquer Channon in order to learn the secret of immortality.
  • Enough is Enough features Erutan Revol {nature lover spelt backwards} the Beastmaster, who seeks revenge against Channon's indiscriminate destruction of the region's forests.
  • Death March features Baron Von Tarkin the Dark Lord, ruler of the land of Korresan, who seeks to conquer all of his neighboring kingdoms, starting with Channon.
  • The final campaign, The Last Bastion, tells the story of the invasion of Channon itself, and allows the player to choose to play as any of the five heroes of the other campaigns.
