In Shin Megami Tensei: if..., the player takes the role of either high-school student Takami, heroine of the Persona series, or a generic male character. The hero and their classmates, the entire school building included, are suddenly yanked into Makai, the Demon World. After the initial shock the hero must investigate around the new world he has been thrown into by the actions of Hazama, another student whom, using powers born from a lifetime of hate and anguish, has managed to become the new ruler of Makai. To help the hero there will be a faithful (or not...) companion and the always-present minions recruited by the usual demon-negotiation process or the fusion process into a Jakyou. To make things even more spicy the geniuses at Atlus introduced in this game for the first time in the Megaten history the possibility to acquire Guardian spirits. The way to accomplish this is quite simple: the player must DIE in combat. There is also a sidenote to say about acquiring a guardian spirit: spirits are always mindful of your actions, so stronger and braver players manage to get STRONGER guardian spirits, whereas players who tend to die often tend to remain with weaker guardians. But other than the demon negotiation, the guardian process and such, Shin Megami Tensei: if... has a really strong point in PLOT. There are many different plots, some hidden and unlockable only if other paths have already been completed. And as in all Megaten games, Evil is not always Evil and the Good side isn't always THAT good...
