Video games - Solaris RPG Online

== History ==

Solaris RPG is an online text based roleplaying game started in early 1996. Originally played in Yahoo! chats, Solaris' webmaster employed his budding HTML skills to build a homepage for the game including Homestead chats and a portal room that led to dozens of areas, many of which were secret. Solaris eventually expanded to become more detailed and eventually more advanced chats and a bulletin board were among the several new features added.

In summer of 2005 Solaris RPG developed into Solaris RPG Online
. Solaris RPG Online is an organization dedicated to the ongoing development of Solaris RPG. The organization has continued to develop and now has a full time staff and developing forum community.

Players

Solaris typically has anywhere from 10 to 30 players, of which approximately five to ten are active at any given time. Players can choose from many different races, each with its own base statistics, and customize their characters by selecting one of nearly a dozen different starter job classes. As players advance in Solaris RPG, new races and job classes are opened to them. Solaris has from two to five full time volunteer staff members who sort through item, race, and character submissions and help to moderate, inform, and serve the players of the game.

Gameplay

The game has very detailed rules inspired by materials varying from Dragonball Z to Dungeons and Dragons, as well as a large amount of user-created material. Although combat is possible between the characters, it is rare. Most players gather simply to "live out" their characters lives.

Unlike most RPGs, levels are not used as a measure of character strength. Characters all possess "Power Level," a measurement of that character's overall potency, which is divided into stats and enhanced by items and abilities.

The Setting

Solaris is set on a planet of the same name in the Solaria galaxy. The planet is ten times the size of earth and has a much harsher environment. Gravity is several times higher than earth. Much of the planet is covered in water with creatures the size of mountains living under the ocean surface. Much of the land is covered in forest or desert, with sporadic mountain chains and plains. Solaris Orbits a binary star system, called Alpha and Omega, and has no moon. The ARC, now in a state of disuse, orbits Solaris. Nearby is the rubble of the planet Nidorian, the Cloud Nine asteroid, and The Darks.

It is a widely accepted belief that Noma, the supreme creater, breathed life into a man named Dakon Killener, and gave him a great vessel, called the ARC, or Ancient Relic City. With this ship, Dakon could create entire galaxies. Besides Solaria, Dakon also created the Vegonia, Polaria, and other galaxies. Some were destroyed for unknown reasons. Each galaxy has an Elder god, a divine, powerful creature that is rarely glimpsed. The Elder god of Solaria galaxy is Sunder, a massive tiger-like creature capable of granting wishes.

Solaris is divided into two hemispheres, Eastern and Western, with minor differences seperating the solarians of one half from the other. Generally, western Solarians are reclusive and more powerful than their eastern cousins. However, when a solarian from each hemisphere produces an offspring, he is far greater than either of his parents. Solarians are generally human in appearance, with a more varied range of eye and hair color. The most common solarian hair color is deep blue or bright orange, and violet or grey eyes are also known to appear on Solarians.

Solaris is generally a ghost planet. There have been three major cities, each a 15-mile wide floating city-fortress. The main city is Solaris City, which was the primary residence of Eastern Solarians. Basien was the capital of Western Solaris and was surrounded by the expansive and beautiful Basien gardens. The third major city was Malduke, which crashed during the Great War and is currently only accessible by teleporting or braving a hazardous trip through the fire caverns. At first, play in solaris was limited to those few player characters who were actually members of the game. Over time, it was accepted as a given that other beings existed on solaris, and the planet was claimed to hold at least 1 million people, most of them living in or near one of the two remaining cities.

However, the staff decided to return Solaris to its roots and do away with much of the technology references and the excess population. A storyline was recently completed that detailed the occurrence of the Second Flux, in which a powerful wave of energy was triggered that ravaged the surface of the planet. Almost all life was destroyed, and the face of the planet was completely rearranged. The fate of the Western Solarians is not yet known, but Solaris city crashed to the ground and only a handful of warriors survived, spirited through a strange portal called Perma Tarn Rah by the Elite Master Lumione Therion. Although Lum was only in the portal for ten minutes, over 10,000 years passed on Solaris, during which the planet became wild and feral again, and all traces of technology and population dissapeared.
