Warsong (known as Langrisser Hikari in Japan) is a Sega Genesis game developed by NCS and published by Treco in America. It blended tactical warfare with RPG elements, similar to Fire Emblem. The storyline followed the young Prince Garrett as he escaped an attack on his castle and is immersed in a battle between the forces of good and an ancient evil. Each hero leads up to eight army units, which can be repurchased if they die, but if a hero dies, they are lost forever. When heroes gain enough levels, they may be upgraded to a more powerful class (each character has a different upgrade path).

There were other sequels, but they were never released outside Japan, perhaps due to Warsong's poor performance in English-speaking markets, or perhaps due to the sequels being more story intensive, making translations much more difficult. An unofficial translation of Langrisser 2 (and its remake, Der Langrisser) into English was later made by some fans of the game.

The Open Source Strategy Game The Battle for Wesnoth is heavily inspired by Warsong.
